Fighting a Traffic Citation vs. Seeking a Reduction
Published on 09/24/2018
When a person receives a traffic citation in North Carolina, many feel they were given the ticket unjustly, and will seek legal representation in order to ‘fight the ticket’, and dispute their given speed. However, most traffic violations in North Carolina are not handled in this matter. What many attorneys work to do is negotiate on their client’s behalf to have their charge reduced to a lesser violation. This is different than disputing the given speed in that it would not require a trial with several court appearances, nor does the defendant need to appear alongside their attorney (in the majority of matters). A trial does hold the possibility of the speeding charge being dismissed, however that would require that the defendant was not speeding at all. By instead seeking a reduction in the charge, this saves the defendant both time and money, while still minimizing negative consequences such as license and insurance points.
